Game of Thrones: Dothraki Phrasebook

The Dothraki are nomadic horse-riding warriors of Essos in George R. R. Martin’s fantasy book series A Song of Ice and Fire and its television adaptation Game of Thrones.

Their language was developed for the TV series by linguist David J. Peterson based on words and phrases in Martin’s novels. Peterson drew inspiration from such languages as Turkish, Russian, Estonian, Inuktitut and Swahili. As of September 2011, the language comprised 3,163 words.

For a quick introduction to the language, check out the above infographic by the team at Momondo Group Ltd.. You never know, if you ever find yourself in the Dothraki Sea, you’ll need to know some common phrases.

If you’re interested in learning Dothraki as a second language, I’d recommend the Muzzy language course in the video below.

Why isn’t there a Rosetta Stone course for Dothraki yet? Klingon has one.
