Harry Shearer’s departure from The Simpsons is a huge loss for the show. Over the past 26 years he’s brought life to such classic characters as Ned Flanders, Mr. Burns, Smithers, Principal Skinner, Otto, Lenny, Kent Brockman and way more. Apparently he wanted the freedom to do other work. So how will producers handle replacing so many characters? Well, The Simpsons already did it when Milhouse quit the Radioactive Man movie.
I’m kidding, of course, but after 25+ years they probably could get pretty far just using old voice clips. Anyway, I’ll be curious to see how recasting goes.
Shearer spent over a quarter of a century working on that show, so I can’t really blame him for wanting to do something new. I don’t often watch new episodes of The Simpsons anymore anyway, so I’m not too upset about it, but it’s sad to see him go. If he had quit in the ’90s, however, there would have been rioting in the streets!
What do you guys think? Should they recast all his characters? Kill some of them off? Is it finally time to bring the show to an end? Some would say we’re well past that point already. Let me know in the comments.
Best of luck to Harry Shearer in his future endeavors!
